2007 FTTH Council Awards Celebrate Outstanding Contributions

ORLANDO, Fla. --(Business Wire)-- Today the Fiber-to-the-Home Council announced the 2007 recipients of its annual FTTH Awards. For five years, the Council has celebrated the outstanding contributions of individuals in the industry who have advanced the fiber to the home (FTTH) industry. The announcement was made today at the closing general session of the 2007 FTTH Conference & Expo which took place from October 1 - 4, 2007 in Orlando.

The Chairman's Award - Jim Farmer, CTO, Wave7 Optics

The Chairman's Award, given at the discretion of the Chairman of the FTTH Council's Board of Directors, singles out an individual or company that has shown tremendous effort to promote, educate or accelerate fiber.

This year, the Council recognized Jim Farmer, CTO of Wave7 Optics, for his outstanding contribution to the success and growth of the fiber to the home industry. Well known for his expertise in last mile technology, Farmer is a pioneer in the video transport function in telecommunications networks and has 90 patents in the field of set top converter scrambling systems and video server systems. He has co-authored two editions of books on cable TV as well as numerous articles for NCTA, SCTE and IEEE. Farmer was also a major player in the landmark FCC decision to free FTTH from unbundling requirements which then cleared the way for Verizon to jump start its FiOS initiative. After 24 years at Scientific Atlanta, Farmer went on to found Wave7 Optics with others, where his technological leadership has played a key part in architectural definition, FR overlay implementation and video design for the 'Last Mile' link architecture. Farmer's tireless efforts and contributions to the FTTH Council are appreciated by all who have worked with him.

The Star Award

The Star Award recognizes a person, community or company that has gone above and beyond what is expected in the advancement of fiber to the home.

This year's recipient is Michael Render, CEO and President of Render Vanderslice LLC. Render has overseen an extensive research study of North American fiber to the home deployments for six years, and has been frequently quoted in trade publications and in national publications such as Business Week, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. His research has been used to update officials at the FCC and other federal agencies on the progress of the technology. Render has over 30 years of market research experience in diverse industries.

The Photon Award - Mark Turner, Manager Consulting Engineering, Corning Cable Systems

The Photon Award recognizes a FTTH Council member who, through their volunteer contribution, has demonstrated a high level of dedication to the organization and contribution to the industry.

Mark Turner, Corning Cable Systems marketing manager of FTTx Consultant modeling/optimizing FTTH network deployment, is this year's recipient. As a member of the 2007 FTTH Council Technology Committee, Turner was instrumental in supporting the Home Networking Zone, which made its debut at this year's annual conference. He not only solicited the participation of exhibitors in the property but also coordinated the technical needs of each and managed the execution of the exhibit. Turner chairs the Technology Committee which has produced numerous white papers and he has also introduced a series of technical webinars offered to the fiber community on a monthly basis. Turner has displayed tremendous dedication, time and commitment with his volunteer contribution to the FTTH Council throughout the year.
