ACCA Networks and Alcatel Trial WiMAX in Tokyo

French technology provider Alcatel announced on Wednesday that it was tapped by ACCA Networks, a Japanese DSL and Optical Fiber Access service provider to launch a WiMAX trial in the Tokyo area.

This deal follows Alcatel's announcement two months ago which confirmed the availability of its Evolium WiMAX radio system for commercial network deployments from mid-2006, and only four months after the IEEE ratified its new standard. This deployment will be Alcatel's first WiMAX reference in Japan based on the 802.16e-2005 and the IEEE's universal WiMAX standard.

The WiMAX trial network will be deployed this June. ACCA will specifically validate the integration of WiMAX services in its existing DSL portfolio, with a first set of applications including video streaming, high-speed Internet access and VoIP.

"We are looking forward to developing a partnership with Alcatel (News - Alert) in the area of WiMAX broadband wireless access", said Yoshio Sakata, president of ACCA and head of WiMAX Business Development in a statement. "We selected Alcatel because of their commitment to the IEEE 802.16e-2005 WiMAX standard and their undisputed leadership in providing operators with the most advanced solution. The Alcatel solution is available now and can be easily integrated into our network."

The Alcatel Evolium WiMAX system provided for the trial will operate in the 2.5 GHz frequency band and it is comprised of base station equipment, indoor CPE (Customer Premises Equipment), mobile terminals and integration services.

"This cooperation with ACCA illustrates Alcatel's commitment to WiMAX as a key element of its universal broadband access strategy. It also shows how WiMAX enables innovative service providers such as ACCA to provide their customers with cutting-edge broadband services that can be accessed from anywhere," noted Marc Rouanne, president of Alcatel's mobile communications activities.

Today's news follows Alcatel's announcement yesterday about it inking a contract with the Mobile Services Department (DMD) of the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations to deliver the "Manager of Managers" system (MoM). The system will enable DMD to manage the national safety and security communication system (C2000), which is based on the European mobile TETRA standard. The MoM-system is expected to be operational in the last quarter of 2006.

The current C2000 network has 450 antenna posts interconnecting around 70,000 pagers and walkie-talkies carried by emergency services personnel. In addition, 28 emergency rooms and security offices, customs offices and the Explosive Ordinance Disposal of the Royal Dutch Army are linked to the same system.
