Apple Computer, Inc. Expands Recycling Program

TMCnet Associate Editor

Users of Macintosh computers now have one more reason to love the company that makes them. Apple Computer, Inc., announced recently a free recycling program for all new Macintosh systems, starting in June 2006.

In a press release, the company explained how the program works: “US customers who buy a new Mac through the Apple (News - Alert) Store (www.apple.com) or Apple’s retail stores will receive free shipping and environmentally friendly disposal of their old computer as part of the Apple Recycling program.”

The program expands upon an existing recycling program the company has been running since 2001, Apple said in the release.

Apple stores currently accept iPods for free recycling, and Apple accepts old Macs at its Cupertino, California headquarters (free for residents, $30 for others), the Associated Press reports.

Apple added that it recently was named a “Forward Green Leader” by Sierra Club.

“Apple is committed to supporting our customers and protecting the environment throughout the entire product life cycle, from purchase through to retirement,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, in a statement to the press.

In the same release, Apple noted that “the fifth generation iPod, iPod nano and iPod shuffle are 100 percent compliant with the upcoming restrictions of hazardous substances (RoHS) in California and Europe, which are recognized as the new global standard for environmental regulation.”

An AP report notes that environmental advocacy organizations applaud Apple’s expanded recycling program, but say the company still needs to do more to improve recycling.
