Apple to Ship New MacBook Pro

TMCnet Contributing Writer

Apple Computer, Inc. announced that it will start shipping the new MacBook Pro, the company's first laptop computer to have an Intel Corp. microprocessor. Apple has also introduced its first Intel-based desktop computer, the iMac G5.

The Intel-based Macintosh products are expected to enhance Apple's share in the U.S. PC market, which has increased slightly over the last year to over 4 percent, thanks to the popularity of Apple's iPod media players.

With the Intel's Core Duo processors, Apple has come to par with the same kind of chips that competitor manufacturers of Windows-based computers use, allowing Apple to tap into the vast marketing power of Intel, the world's largest semiconductor company.

According to The Associated Press report, the MacBook Pro generates up to four times the performance of its former flagship laptop, the PowerBook G4 that has the power of PowerPC chips from IBM Corp. and Freescale Semiconductor Inc.

Apple has made it clear that they aren’t using the previously announced 1.83-gigahertz Core Duo processor.  Instead, the MacBook will feature a 2.0 Ghz chip. The MacBook will be available for a retail price of $2,499. On the other hand, the lower-end $1,999 model will have a 1.83 Ghz chip, in place of the 1.67 Ghz chip. Customers will also have an option to upgrade to a 2.16 Ghz version.

After the announcement, Apple shares have gone up $2.94, or 4.5 percent to close at $67.65 Tuesday on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
