Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) is powering Ascom Wireless Solutions' i75 voice over WiFi (News - Alert) (VoWiFi) handsets. Specifically, TI integrated its Wireless LAN (WLAN) IP phone platform, the TNETV1700. TI's integrated hardware and software system enables Ascom deliver extended talk and standby times to its enterprise customers, and enhanced features such as wireless telephony, alarm and messaging.

"With over 50 years of experience in on-site wireless communications, Ascom is continuously taking strides to deliver exceptional mobility to its customers," said Staffan Ornbratt, product manager, VoWiFi system, Ascom Wireless Solutions in a statement. "Leveraging TI's leadership VoIP and wireless technology allows Ascom to offer a VoWiFi experience that increases overall efficiency and productivity of its users."

TI's TNETV1700 WLAN IP phone platform allows Ascom's i75 handsets to support both the 802.11b and 802.11g radio networks, as well as the 802.11i and 802.11e standards for better security and voice quality. The VoWiFi handsets offer longer talk and standby times based on the higher performance and lower power consumption that the TNETV1700 delivers.

"We are pleased to be working with Ascom to bring a higher quality, more productive experience to enterprise IP phone users through our VoIP and WLAN technology," said Pamela Jordan, WLAN IP Phone product manager, Texas Instruments. "By leveraging our programmable WLAN IP phone platform, Ascom provides investment protection for its customers, including the ability to update systems through software to enhance capabilities or further increase talk and standby times."

TI's WLAN IP phone platform includes the TNETV1700 VoWLAN processor, based on TI's OMAP architecture and TI's TNETW1230 WLAN chipset with software support. TI's Telogy Software for VoIP provides voice processing software, and supports the transport of voice over WLAN networks.

TI made news back in March when it introduced the TNETV1061, its latest VoIP system on a chip. The chip provides VoIP and data routing features and it seems to be a good choice for residential applications and service provider deployments.

The new chip also integrates TI's Telogy Software for VoIP featuring the company's DSPs for real-time signal processing. The complete software and silicon system is held together by the TNETV1061's dual processor architecture, good for simultaneous real-time voice processing and data traffic under heavy load conditions.
