Mobile phone distributor Brightpoint Inc. announced on Thursday that that its subsidiary, Brightpoint North America L.P. will develop, host and maintain a Web-based store for consumers and businesses to purchase Skype products and services in the U.S. and Canadian markets.

"As an authorized dealer and distributor for Skype, Brightpoint has been instrumental in bringing Skype certified products and services to consumers," said Saul Klein, vice president of marketing for Skype. "Creating a more robust Web store offers our users a convenient online destination for all Skype-related products."

The new Web-based store will enable consumers and businesses to purchase Skype-certified hardware and accessory products including Skype certified products from Motorola, Linksys, Logitech, and others.

"We are very pleased to expand our relationship with Skype and apply our expertise in building and hosting websites," said David Brown, Brightpoint's senior vice president of Advanced Wireless Services. "The Internet communications space is growing rapidly and consumers are eager to purchase products that enable a rich Internet voice calling experience. Skype is making it simple for consumers and businesses to purchase the full suite of Skype -ertified products."

Skype made news last month when it announced that its Skype-certified hardware and software products started selling at approximately 3,500 RadioShack retail establishments around the U.S., as well as on the electronic giant's online store, just in time for this holiday season. The agreement will make RadioShack the first U.S. retailer to offer the Internet phone service.

RadioShack is currently selling a Skype Trial Pack; a VoIP Voice Cyberphone K USB Internet phone for Skype; a Linksys Cordless Internet Telephony Kit; a Motorola PC850 Adapter and Bluetooth H500 Headset Kit; and a Logitech USB Headset 250.

"RadioShack is known for helping make the market for new technologies, and by all indicators Skype is poised to resonate with U.S. customers after experiencing huge success overseas," said Jim Hamilton, RadioShack's senior vice president and chief merchandising officer. "Customers should love how they can cut their phone bill without cutting their phone line, making unlimited free calls to other Skype users around the world."
