Cisco Introduces Intelligent Services Gateway (ISG) at GlobalComm

)® today announced the availability of the Intelligent Services Gateway (ISG) feature set for the Cisco 10000 Series, Cisco 7200
Series and 7301 model routers.
Advanced subscriber awareness, resource provisioning and access control capabilities in the Cisco ISG distribute service intelligence to the Internet Protocol (IP) network edge. This simplifies creation and speeds delivery of advanced IP services over Cisco IP Next-Generation Networks (IP NGNs). To accelerate the processing of such services and to provide greater investment protection, Cisco also announced that it has enhanced the performance of the routing engines on the Cisco 10000 Series and Cisco 7200 Series routing platforms. "Getting beyond incrementalism and truly transforming infrastructures requires providers to have subscriber management, policy enforcement, policy management and service assurance capabilities that are application, access and traffic-demand agnostic," said Mark Seery, vice president for IP Service Infrastructure at Ovum-RHK. "The breadth of customers Cisco supports, and the architectural flexibility that requires, has resulted in the development of the Intelligent Services Gateway, an integral part of the Cisco Service Exchange Framework and a capability which sets a standard for other vendors to meet."
In November 2005 Cisco announced it had shipped 50,000 routers for broadband aggregation, all of which can be upgraded to ISG or given the new routing engines, providing unmatched investment protection. Leading providers that have deployed Cisco routers for broadband aggregation include China Network Communications Group, China Unicom, Deutsche Telekom, EarthLink, Telefónica de España and Telecom Italia.

Because almost any IP device can be voice-, video-, or data-enabled, service providers are delivering many services to many screens over converged fixed and mobile networks. Today's consumers of data, voice and video (triple-play) services demand a unified, high-performance experience at home, at work and on the move. The Cisco ISG controls subscriber access at the edge of the network to enable the provisioning and management of broadband networks for a broad range of access and edge technologies, subscriber numbers and service types, effectively linking subscriber service requests with distributed policy control to help ensure a high quality of experience for the emerging "Connected Life."
Quality of service (QoS) is a key determinant of users' satisfaction with their media experience, and the Cisco ISG helps ensure optimal QoS by providing the subscriber awareness needed to enable service prioritization and coordination for the simultaneous delivery of triple-play and mobile services over a converged IP network.
New Cisco ISG and Cisco Service Control Engine Solution add Subscriber and Application-Awareness to Enhance Quality of Experience
As an integral part of the Service Exchange Framework (SEF) of the Cisco IP NGN architecture, the Cisco ISG provides the necessary intelligence to enable many services to many screens by offering:
Multidimensional identity capabilities that simplify authentication using a single sign-on from any access point and that build an extensible subscriber profile to enable high-quality, tailored service delivery.
Integrated policy management that allows service providers to dynamically apply QoS on a per-subscriber basis. By distributing the network intelligence, Cisco provides for more scalable and efficient policy administration.
Dynamic personalization, which allows transparent application of subscriber-specific personal preferences to enhance overall application performance.
Operational integration, which simplifies the network management of multiple services.
With broad cross-platform interoperability and open-standards compliance, the Cisco ISG acts as an open integration point that bridges service-to-network administration functions and eliminates multinetwork operations, allowing providers to speed new service offerings to market.
Cisco has added additional functionality to the SEF with a solutions approach, joining the Cisco ISG with the Cisco Service Control Engine via a shared, common bus technology. The close coupling of subscriber-aware and application-aware functions enabled by these devices allows service providers to dramatically enhance the quality of experience of triple-play services. Traditional subscriber-management systems can enhance the user experience through pull-based techniques such as parental control, self-care or turbo-buttons that accelerate performance for a specific application in a specific timeframe based on a subscriber request. The integration of the Cisco ISG and Cisco SCE enables new push-based network features that are application-driven, allowing subscribers to select an application or a set of applications for automatic prioritization based on individual needs and preferences.
Performance of Edge Routing Engines Enhanced
The new Cisco PRE-3 and NPE-G2 routing engines for Cisco 10000 Series and Cisco 7200 Series edge routers enhance performance while protecting network investment. These routing engines were developed to power combined routing and subscriber-management functions and build on the Cisco strategy to integrate service intelligence into the network to lower capital equipment costs for providers.
