EU approves type of genetically modified maize

The Associated Press

The European Commission on Friday authorized the use of a genetically modified strain of maize for use as food and food ingredients.

Imports of the modified 1507 strain, produced by U.S. Pioneer Hi-Bred International and Dow Chemical's AgroSciences unit, and its use in animal feed were approved by the EU in November. Friday's decision means the maize can be used in food and derived products, such as oil, provided its genetically modified nature is clearly indicated on a label.

The 1507 strain has been modified to resist certain parasites and herbicides.

The EU ended a six-year moratorium on accepting applications for new genetically modified foods in May 2004, but some EU nations remain reluctant to authorize them.

Concerns about the safety of biotech foods for consumers and the environment have led many Europeans avoid such products.
