TMCnet Contributing Editor

SIPphone, the developers of the free Internet calling software Gizmo Project has announced the delivery of Gizmo Project 2.0. The perk of this announcement is the solution’s support for Asterisk PBX software.

By providing the ability to log into Asterisk, Gizmo Project users can be universally reachable via their Asterisk PBX or directly through the Gizmo Project network. Through the seamless reception of call from their office PBX while anywhere in the world, Gizmo Project’s advanced NAT (network address translation); firewall and router traversal features and server infrastructure are leveraged.

The availability of Asterisk to power an office PBX provides benefits previously only obtainable by large businesses such as cost savings, efficiencies and access to additional features.

Users can also avoid special VoIP phones or the expense of traditional phone call charges when utilizing the Gizmo Project as an office softphone. Incoming calls to an office PBX will reach mobile workers anywhere in the world.

High-end features are also available on the Gizmo Project such as voicemail-to-email, free conference calling, call history, free access to millions of people on SIP-based networks and built-in instant messaging (IM) capabilities.

Michael Robertson, chairman and CEO of SIPphone noted that the Gizmo Project is now the ideal softphone with any size deployment regardless of whether a company is focused on a completely free Asterisk PBX installation or is running a premium version.

Robertson continued that SIPphone’s experience at routing millions of calls through almost any network setup means that mobile computer users can be reached anywhere as if they were physically in their office. In addition, companies can realize cost savings with low domestic and International calling rates using Gizmo Project.

Companies worldwide deploying the Asterisk PBX software, premium PBXs developed by such companies as SwitchVox, Epigy, webFones or any other SIP-based PBXs will now be able to easily use Gizmo Project for making and receiving calls. Crystal clear VoIP calls are available with the free Gizmo Project software for Apple Macintosh, Microsoft Windows and Linux computers. Using licensed, best-of-breed audio codecs such as GIPS, Gizmo Project employs media relays around the world to route calls through the most efficient path. Calls can also be routed through one of several phone partners which provides for the lowest possible per minute International calling rates. PC-to-PC calls are always free.

For those professionals who rely on these types of solutions in order to remain mobile and effective in their jobs, the Gizmo Project with Asterisk support gives them an even better option to stay connected as it provides complete clarity as if they were in their office.

This option also provides significant benefit for the company as mobility traditionally adds cost as additional solutions have to be implemented to offer support both in-house and on the road.

For the mobile professional, Gizmo Project 2.0 can also reduce or even eliminate the amount of calls made on his or her own phone that have to be reimbursed by the company. Eliminating this step not only saves time, but also eliminates the frustration of the record-keeping, thus enabling the professional to spend more time producing than housekeeping.
