iBasis Lowers Central America Call Fees for its Pingo Service
TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist
Pingo, the prepaid calling card service of iBasis, announced on Wednesday that it lowered its rates on calls to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama.
Customers calling these countries may want to thank the company's RateWatcher, a feature that actively searches for opportunities to reduce costs.
"We're very happy to be able to leverage our scale and efficiency to offer lower rates to our Pingo customers who call these Central American countries," said Ofer Gneezy, president and CEO of iBasis. "Pingo's combination of very competitive rates, great convenience features, and opportunities to earn bonus calling time make it a terrific deal. This RateWatcher reduction, our fifth in the past year, is aiming to increase the number of Pingo subscribers by attracting callers to countries in Central America, including Guatemala and El Salvador, two of the top 20 calling destinations from the U.S."
iBasis explained that certifying Quintum will enable customers and partners deploying the Tenor AXT or AXM Series VoIP MultiPath Switches to establish direct interconnections to exchange international traffic with the iBasis network. Prior to certification, clients would deploy these products in their networks where analog termination was required and digital circuits were not available. iBasis and Quintum engineers collaborated to develop the necessary software enhancements to enable the Quintum platform to achieve DirectVoIP certification as a more cost-effective analog solution. iBasis required refinements to provide effective call supervision to support iBasis' higher quality standards.
"Quintum was very responsive to our technical requirements, and we collaborated very effectively to enhance call supervision and overcome interoperability challenges," said Paul Floyd, iBasis’ senior vice president of research and development back then. "As a result, we're able to provide our wholesale trading partners an effective analog interconnection to our VoIP network in those difficult international markets where digital connections simply are not an option."
