Dittberner: IPTV Equipment Market to Reach $1.5 Billion by 2013

A recent report from the market research firm Dittberner Associates shows that the market for IPTV set-top-boxes, headend equipment and middleware will reach $1.5 billion by 2013.
Specifically, the report, entitled “IPTV Impact on Public Networks,” predicts that the STB market will reach $744,106,000; the headend equipment market will reach $176,103,000; and the middleware market will reach $614,356,000.
“The headend equipment market will be rather small, only reaching $176 Million,” said James Heath, director of broadband research at Dittberner and the author of the just published report “This is in line with developments in digital TV transmission, which will allow for more centralized processing and encoding of TV signals than in the past. Although the IPTV middleware market has many players and will continue to be dynamic, today it is largely dependent on the Microsoft’s IPTV Edition success in public networks.”
The report finds that the headend equipment market’s total size depends on the number of subscribers served by each headend.
The set-top-box market will be influenced by the shift to HDTV and the inclusion of digital video recorder capability in the set-top-box.
The report also concludes that the broadband access infrastructure will need to be upgraded in virtually every market in order to begin to offering IPTV. Once the infrastructure is upgraded, the incremental cost to service providers planning to offer IPTV services will be low.
