Verizon Rolls Out FiOS to Communities in New Hampshire and Upper New York

TMCnet Associate Editor

Verizon this week announced that its FiOS TV service, which runs over the company’s fiber-to-the home (FTTH) network, is about to become available in Portsmouth, Greenland, Newington, Stratham and New Castle, N.H., and is already available in Bedford, Epping, Newton, Plaistow, Salem and Windham.

In addition, the company announced that the service is now available in the Erie County, N.Y., communities of Orchard Park and Hamburg.

The company is offering several tiers of its FiOS service, which also offers high speed Internet and VoIP. The company boasts that it all-fiber network can deliver downstream (download) speeds of up to 5, 15 and 30 Mbps and upstream (upload) speeds of up to 5 Mbps. FiOS will soon be available in about half the states where Verizon does business.

Residential customers who want to find out if FiOS is available in their area should call 888-GET FIOS (888-438-3467) or visit
www.verizonfios.com. Small businesses can contact their local Verizon business office or account manager to determine if they qualify for FiOS Internet Service for Business.

“FiOS is setting the new standard for consumer and small-business broadband services in America,” said Polly Brown, Verizon regional president for northern New England, in a press release on the company’s website. “Customers who already subscribe to FiOS services are astounded at what they now can do with their online experience. Video chats and conferencing, purchased digital movie downloads and interactive multi-player games have become a part of their daily lives.”

“And FiOS for Business gives companies robust connection speeds for bandwidth-intensive applications at prices close to those the companies pay for ordinary broadband services,” Brown added.

Verizon claims its FTTH network “has the capability to offer a full suite of video services in the future” to both residential and business customers.

“The availability of a world-class technology infrastructure is critical to attracting new businesses growth and making Buffalo Niagara competitive in the global marketplace, especially in our target industries of life sciences, advanced manufacturing and information technology,” said Thomas A. Kucharski, president and CEO of Buffalo Niagara Enterprise, which markets the Buffalo Niagara region as a place for new business investment and expansion. “Verizon’s decision to make this level of investment speaks volumes about the company's commitment to support and enhance Western New York.”
