A new IPTV-capable Optical Network Unit (ONU) chip has been announced for fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) access networks. Teknovus has unveiled the TK3713 ONU chip, offering a high level of integration and requiring less board space and power than typical ONUs – on a single chip.

The TK3713 supports Teknovus’ built-in quality of service attributes, making it qualified for mass deployment in new and existing IPTV networks. It is standards compliant and interoperates with IEEE 802.3ah compliant ONUs from other suppliers. IPTV features include forward error correction, bidirectional encryption, an ultra-low jitter SerDes, multiple LLIDs per ONU, hardware-based SLA enforcement and a line-rate packet-processing engine.

The new 130nm system-on-chip (SoC) is the first member of a larger Teknovus platform offering a toolkit for development of next-generation home gateway solutions. The platform features carrier-grade firmware and reference designs, and Teknovus offers technical support to facilitate the interconnection of its chips with those of its partners. The next phase of the platform development will include a seamless extension to higher bandwidth NGEPON.

"With the proliferation of bandwidth-hungry FTTH applications, especially IPTV, next-generation home gateways must step up the performance curve,” said Michael Howard, principal analyst and co-founder of Infonetics Research. “Teknovus is providing a leading edge integration platform designed for the next wave of CPE to meet carrier requirements for cost reduction. The TK3713 single-chip ONU is positioned to do well as carriers worldwide roll out IPTV-enabled, triple-play networks."

"The service providers are now specifying FTTH solutions capable of handling advanced services that take full advantage of EPON-based access networks. The TK3713 forms the foundation for highly-integrated, cost-effective solutions that meet these new requirements. Our unique support for IPTV will simplify service providers' deployment decisions," said Dr. Rex Naden, president and CEO of Teknovus.
