Juniper’s M- and T-Series Routers Will Be Used For Core of CNGI

Juniper Networks today announced that its M- and T-series routing platforms will be used for the core of the China Next Generation Internet (CNGI) project, a Chinese government-funded initiative to promote Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) throughout China.

The CNGI project, launched in 2003 by China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), is expected to result in the largest IPv6 network in the world. The goal is to build a national IPv6 backbone covering 20 cities and 39 massive network points of presence (GigaPOPs).

IPv6, the next generation Internet Protocol, is a significant upgrade from the current IPv4 system because it drastically multiplies the number of IP addresses and therefore can accommodate a greater number of networked devices, users and applications.

Eric Yu, Juniper Networks’ vice president, Greater China, said in a press release that all of China’s major service providers and communications networks are participating in the project, and that all have “decided to base their portions of the CNGI infrastructure on our M- and T-series platforms.” Participating networks include the China Education and Research Network (CERNET2), China Mobile, China Netcom, China Railcom, China Telecom and China Unicom.

Once installed, the M- and T-series platforms will provide a test bed for Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and will ultimately enable service providers to offer advanced IPv6 services including virtual private networking, IP voice and video streaming, and third-generation mobile applications.

In addition, the platforms will allow for interoperability with IPv4-based networks via Juniper’s JUNOS operating system (standard with both the M- and T-series), enabling CNGI to facilitate the seamless transition of IPv4 networks to IPv6 as the networks expand to meet the growing needs of the businesses, government, institutions and general populace of China.
