TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist
IP network service provider Juniper Networks Inc. announced on Tuesday it acquired Acorn Packet Solutions Inc. in a cash transaction valued at up to approximately $8.7 million. Acorn is a developer of products and technologies that connect legacy Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and other circuit-based apps across IP networks. Juniper made the announcement at the Internet Telephony Conference & EXPO taking place this week at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California.
"Juniper Networks is focused on delivering secure and assured networking solutions that enable organizations worldwide to capitalize on the cost and scaling benefits of IP. Helping customers transition to converged IP networks supporting a range of services including data, voice and video, while protecting their investments in legacy technologies, is a key part of that. With Acorn Packet Solutions, Juniper gains best-in-class technology and deep expertise to help customers effect this transition smoothly and cost-effectively," noted Carol Mills, executive vice president and general manager, Infrastructure Products Group, Juniper Networks.
Frederick, MD-based Acorn was founded in 2002. The company develops IP voice, wireless and data products for U.S. Federal government customers.
"Acorn has done an excellent job of differentiating itself in the Federal market as a leader in circuit to IP migration. With this acquisition, Juniper is demonstrating its continued commitment to supporting the Federal government in re-architecting its mission critical networks," commented Thomas Kreidler, vice president, Federal Systems, Juniper Networks.
Acorn's technology includes a clocking "toolkit" that enables organizations to choose the appropriate method for the end-to-end timing of these critical circuits across an IP network. Circuit types are software configurable and operate at rates from 75bps to 12.288 Mbps.
Today's news follows Juniper's recently announced partnership with Meru Networks to co-market wireless VoIP products and services.
According to the news announcement released in August, the agreement called for Meru to join Juniper’s J-Partner Infrastructure Alliance program as a preferred member, and "immediately begin collaborating with Juniper on several fronts, including joint sales engagements and other co-marketing activities."
The agreement would enable both companies to bundle Juniper’s IP routing and security offering with Meru’s Air Traffic Control technology for WLANs, in order to enable IP voice for mobile enterprise users.
If you are at IT EXPO, you can catch Juniper's own Dave Boland speaking at the Building Networks for Delivering IPTV session today from 1 to 1:45pm; Gal Rosenzweig at the Session Border Control for VoIP Networks session on Thursday from 2:15 to 3pm; and Opher Kahane's keynote session tomorrow at 5:45pm.
