IT EXPO News: Voxeo Acquires Vocomo's Remains

TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist

Voxeo Corporation just acquired the customers, support contracts, and VoiceXML platform products of Vocomo Software Corporation, the company announced on Tuesday. The move will enable Voxeo to support existing Vocomo customers, provide Vocomo platform bug fixes and enhancements, and sell new customer licenses for the Vocomo platform. The agreement also allowed Voxeo to hire Vocomo's support staff.

"Vocomo ceased operations on Wednesday August 31st, 2005. Like many startup companies, despite exhaustive efforts, we were unable to raise capital and were left without other options. We have greatly enjoyed serving our customers and want to assure you that we are doing everything possible to facilitate a smooth transition. As of August 31st, 2005, Voxeo will provide 24x7 support for VocomoVoice Response customers. Voxeo is also committed to making this transition as smooth as possible," said Vocomo's notice posted on their Web site.

The acquisition will add over 100 new Vocomo enterprise accounts to Voxeo's premises-based IVR customer portfolio. Vocomo technology will also be incorporated into Voxeo's own VoiceCenter 7.0 IVR platform release, due next year. Vocomo customers with active support agreements will receive a free software upgrade to the combined platform.

"Early this year, Voxeo launched its award-winning VoiceCenter Fusion products," said Clegg Ivey, vice president of strategy and operations at Voxeo, "In the first three quarters of 2005, we've sold four times as many customer-premise Fusion servers as we projected. This rapid growth reaffirmed our emphasis on expanding our premise IVR business, and Vocomo presented us with an excellent opportunity to do just that.”

Vocomo's standards-based IVR platform bundles a VoiceXML 2.0 interpreter, multi-vendor speech recognition and text-to-speech capabilities, a Web-based management console, an IVR application debugger, and Windows and Linux OS support into a package for enterprise IVR customers. These features will all be retained in the merged VoiceCenter 7.0 product.

Voxeo made news back in September when it was tapped by Skype for its VoiceCenter Hosted IVR Voice Application Platform. The partnership would connect Skype callers and Skype Credit accounts to voice services running on Voxeo's VoiceCenter Hosted IVR Voice Application Platforms through Skype's Voice Services Program.

"Skype has driven a revolution in personal communications by popularizing free Internet phone calls. We are committed to opening the endless possibilities for voice by creating a marketplace for our thriving ecosystem of partners and developers to make it easy for their innovative services to be available to our millions of callers worldwide," said Niklas Zennström, CEO and co-founder of Skype back then. "We challenge the world's most creative content providers to work with us and our partners such as Voxeo to develop these new and exciting forms of Internet voice services."

If you are at Internet Telephony Conference & EXPO taking place at the Los Angeles Convention Center in California this week, don't forget to stop by booth #740 and meet the guys from Voxeo and experience live demos of their products!
