Broadband Adoption Means More Web, Portal Opportunities

By DAVID R. BUTCHER, Assistant Editor, Customer Interaction Solutions

JupiterResearch, a division of Jupitermedia Corporation, today announced what it perceives as the critical-mass arrival of broadband, as the corporate division’s newest research shows more than 43 percent of online households are connecting to the Internet via broadband.

This presents an opportunity for portals and content Web sites to shift market share, according to the Connecticut-based company’s announcement of recent survey results. Based on these surveys, as well as traffic analysis, the recently released JupiterResearch report entitled “Portals: Broadband Programming to Gain Market Share” finds that entertainment programming dominates broadband use, along with customization and advanced communications (such as blogs and personal pages).

With JupiterResearch forecasting broadband adoption to reach nearly 80 percent of online U.S. households — translated to 69 million households — by 2010, portals and content sites can take advantage of these increases to gain market share by experimenting with Flash-based home pages and customizable RSS feeds.

“AOL’s beta release of AOL.com is a best-practice example of what can be achieved by redesigning a site as a true broadband portal,” said JupiterResearch VP and Senior Analyst David Card, in an announcement of the new report. “AOL is well-positioned to try to steal Yahoo’s early lead in RSS and teach the masses how to use this hot technology.”
