Nortel Networks Corp. announced on Monday that it has appointed former Motorola and General Electric executive Mike Zafirovski as its new president and CEO.

Zafirovski, 51, will succeed current president and CEO Bill Owens on Nov. 15.

“I’ve had the privilege, through my career of working for organizations whose success was based on understanding and leveraging tremendous internal brainpower and human capital,” said Zafirovski in a prepared statement.  “And that’s why I’m so excited about Nortel.  I see those same characteristics at play.  They’re the foundation of Nortel’s tradition of leadership and innovation, its global presence and its iconic status for technical excellence.

The company said that Owens, upon leaving Nortel, will continue his engagements in serving on various boards and will pursue entrepreneurial endeavors and philanthropic interests.
