Pakistan's Carrier Taps iBasis for VoIP Services
TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist
Burlington, Mass.-based iBasis Inc. announced Monday that Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL), the national carrier of Pakistan, interconnected with the company's iBasis Network for international VoIP services. The interconnection will enable PTCL to route international voice traffic over the iBasis Network, as well as complete calls for iBasis over its network in Pakistani country.
The deal enabled PTCL to implement a direct IP connection between its Huawei IP Backbone infrastructure and iBasis' global VoIP network, which comprises direct routes to more than 100 countries interoperating with the iBasis DirectVoIP. Huawei is a DirectVoIP-certified equipment provider, which simplifies the process of interconnecting the PTCL infrastructure to iBasis' Cisco-powered network.
"PTCL is an innovative incumbent carrier embracing the benefits of VoIP to enhance the Pakistan's communications capabilities," said Ofer Gneezy, president and CEO of iBasis. "We look forward to helping them to expand their VoIP services even while we leverage this relationship to grow our traffic to Pakistan."
iBasis made news last month when it announced that it lowered its Pingo prepaid calling card service rates on calls to Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Panama. Customers calling these countries may want to thank the company's RateWatcher, a feature that actively searches for opportunities to reduce costs.
"We're very happy to be able to leverage our scale and efficiency to offer lower rates to our Pingo customers who call these Central American countries," said Ofer Gneezy, president and CEO of iBasis. "Pingo's combination of very competitive rates, great convenience features, and opportunities to earn bonus calling time make it a terrific deal. This RateWatcher reduction, our fifth in the past year, is aiming to increase the number of Pingo subscribers by attracting callers to countries in Central America, including Guatemala and El Salvador, two of the top 20 calling destinations from the U.S."
