RFID news announced recently:

Tagsys, a vendor of item-level RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) infrastructure, has announced that it will be demonstrating a new dual frequency, “universal” (UHF and HF) item-level RFID reader designed for point-of-sale retail applications.

The demonstration will take place in Las Vegas. The new reader represents what Tagsys officials think is “a major leap forward in the build out of RFID infrastructure in the retail supply chain,” which “delivers a practical approach for retailers to easily reap the benefits of item-level RFID without being restrained by frequency and technology issues.”

According to a recent report by VDC, spending on in-store RFID applications amounted to $88 million in 2005 and is expected to reach $400  million by 2010. Michael J. Liard, RFID Research Program Director at VDC says as far as item-level RFID in the retail market goes a mixture of tags is currently used, HF used predominantly by the pharmaceutical industry, and UHF, used primarily in the fashion industry.

SmartCode Corp., a vendor of low cost RFID hardware products, has announced that it will offer the world's first 5 cent RFID tags, available in quantities of 100 million.

SmartCode officials claim to be the “first ever company in the world to reach the 5 cent tag.” Since the formation of the EPC standard in 1999, the target tag price for a sustainable, ROI driven RFID market was greatly depended on the availability of the 5 cent RFID tags.

Alien Technology Corporation
and Vue Technology have announced an alliance to sell item level RFID products across multiple industries. Alien ALR-9800 Enterprise RFID readers will interact with the TrueVUE RFID platform.

The TrueVUE RFID platform supports end-to-end item level RFID, enabling manufacturers, retailers and other organizations to streamline the tracking of individual items throughout the supply chain.

Alien Technology will combine Vue Technology's patent-pending RF Networking technology and EPC management software with Alien Enterprise RFID Readers to let customers” realize benefits of item-level RFID,” according to Alien officials.

The item-level RFID solutions can expand the reach of RFID from traditional pallet and case-level distribution applications that focus on broad supply chain visibility to item level applications which focus on achieving visibility and control at a granular level throughout a supply chain.

Markem Corporation
, a vendor of product identification tools, has announced a partnership with ThingMagic, Inc., a vendor of RFID technology.

This partnership is advertised as enhancing “the full suite of Markem's RFID products, including high-speed RFID tagging in production environments, semi-automated tagging, and use of RFID portals for supply chain communication and stock control,” according to Markem officials.

Markem Applied Intelligence Solutions has certified ThingMagic's Mercury4 Serial Reader fourth generation fixed reader and is available for use with its 800 Series high-speed applicator, which applies up to 100 RFID tags per minute and automatically rejects bad tags.

The Mercury4 reader also enables the 800 Series applicator to encode RFID tags at speeds of up to 100 tags per minute. MARKEM RFID implementation services further make use of ThingMagic products, including downstream tag verification to ensure 100 percent compliance.
