SoftMed Announces New Speech Recognition Technology

SoftMed Systems, a provider of healthcare information products, has announced the release of ChartScript ASP, a hosted product for transcription, speech recognition and computer-aided medical transcription.
ChartScript ASP lets healthcare facilities and transcription providers use the latest in transcription technology without the resource expense and capital investment costs of maintaining a large transcription portal and speech recognition server, company officials claim.
And the fact that it's a hosted product means the investment costs can be shared among multiple enterprises.
Healthcare facilities today are faced with rising transcription costs, a shrinking labor pool of transcriptionists, and increased documentation demands. ChartScript ASP is designed to help facilities maximize transcription productivity, reduce costs and turnaround time, and improve transcription quality and accuracy with deferred speech recognition.
The product is advertised as allowing hospitals to augment their transcription services without large upfront costs and the ongoing IT support costs associated with owning technology. It can be used by in-house transcriptionists or outsourced transcription services.
ChartScript ASP uses a deferred speech recognition engine that produces "Ready to Edit" drafts for transcriptionists. The speech recognition engine incorporates SoftMed's patent-pending SyncStream technology, a tool designed to help computer-aided medical transcription.
Deferred speech recognition requires no additional time for the dictator, according to information from Brenda J. Hurley, past president of the American Association for Medical Transcription: "Once the dictation is recorded, the speech processing matches sounds with words and generates a report. An MT/editor then reviews that report and its corresponding voice recording. Revisions and corrections are made, as required, and the report is sent back to the originator for authentication."
Health care institutions and medical transcription services using this technology have reported 40 percent to 50 percent greater production by their MTs/editors. Hurley says user compliance is greatly improved with deferred speech recognition, as the speech processing is transparent to the dictator: "Turnaround time can be reduced and productivity increased."
SyncStream is a natural language processing tool that assembles document text according to a facility's specific standards. SyncStream further assists transcriptionists by formatting speech recognition results into a document that looks and feels like a traditionally transcribed document.
In addition, company officials say, SoftMed's deferred speech recognition product requires no change in physicians' preferred dictation habits. Because we all know how much doctors like changing their habits.
