SunRocket Joins Voice Peering Fabric

TMCnet Executive Editor

While some analysts believe the cable industry may become a formidable player in the behind-the-scenes backhaul of voice traffic, one VoIP service provider is taking a different approach.

SunRocket (News - Alert) has decided to join the Voice Peering Fabric (VPF), a distributed Ethernet network that is separate of the public Internet operated by Stealth Communications, both companies announced on Wednesday.

The move enables SunRocket to exchange voice traffic directly with other VoIP providers instead of accruing costly per-minute charges associated with routing customer calls through the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). And because the VPF is a distributed Layer 2 interconnection fabric, SunRocket customers will be able to sidestep the public Internet and take advantage of the enhanced reliability and quality associated direct peer-to-peer connections.

“We are ecstatic to have one of the nation’s fastest growing residential Internet phone service providers on board to provide valuable muscle and momentum to the Voice Peering Fabric,” said Shrihari Pandit, president and CEO of Stealth Communications. “As SunRocket scales its subscriber base, peering VoIP traffic with other providers without routing through the traditional phone networks will deliver significant benefits to the company by reducing time-to-revenue and enhancing QoS for their customers.”

In addition, SunRocket will be able to access the expanding Telephone Number Mapping (ENUM) registry to determine which calls can route directly to other members.

“Increased participation in VOIP peering by Internet phone service providers will facilitate tremendous efficiency gains and enhance quality of service for customers communicating via internet telephony,” said Mark Fedor, chief technology officer at SunRocket.

What advantages and business implications do carrier-level peering points offer over dedicated fiber? How secure are peering connections? For the answers to those questions and more, mark your calendar to attend the VoIP Peering Summit at INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & Expo, WEST, which runs October 10-13, 2006, in San Diego .
