Local, long distance and Internet services provider Talk America Holdings Inc. said Wednesday that it will acquire Pensacola, Fla.-based Network Telephone Corp. for $20 million.

Network Telephone is a telecommunications service provider that serves business customers in eight southeastern states.

“This will create growth opportunities for both companies and strengthen our ability to capture market share in the Southeast,” said Talk America CEO Ed Meyer in a prepared statement.  “We will add high-end IP services to NTC’s product portfolio utilizing our soft-switching infrastructure and leverage NTC’s extensive networking assets to deliver voice and broadband services to small and medium-sized businesses and customers in new markets.”

The companies expect the deal to close in early 2006.

Talk America shares rose 9 cents to $9.28 in late afternoon trading on Nasdaq.

Be sure to catch the debut of the Service Provider Summit at this fall’s INTERNET TELEPHONY Conference & Expo, which runs October 24-27, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, focusing on key issues number portability, ENUM, QoS, next-generation OSS and much more.
