Morrisville, N.C.-based Tekelec announced in a news release today that it captured the largest worldwide market share for media gateway Voice over Packet shipments and the second-largest market share in VoP ports shipped in the second quarter of 2005.

According to a report by Dittberner Associates, Inc., "Worldwide Q2 2005 NGN Shipments Analysis," Tekelec shipped nearly 1.4 million ports in the second quarter, which represented 32.8 percent of the media gateway ports market share and 8.74 percent of the total VoIP ports market share.

Tekelec ranked fifth (behind Nortel, Sonus, Cisco and Huawei) in total media gateway revenue in the second quarter of 2005.  Overall, Tekelec's revenue for Q2 2005 was $133 million, a substantial jump over its $95.6 million take in Q2 2004.

The company's growth has certainly caught the eye of Dittberner, which recognized Tekelec "as the global market leader in media gateway shipments for three of the last four quarters."

"Tekelec is clearly committed to extending and solidifying its leadership in the media gateway market," said Dittberner vice president Lilian Tau in a prepared statement.

Officials at Tekelec were pleased with the attention that it has received from customers and Dittberner.

"We are growing our next-generation switching revenues and customer base every quarter, both in North America and around the world where operators have recognized the potential of our solutions to support advanced new services, generate revenues, and reduce operations costs," said Fred Lax, Tekelec's president and CEO.  "Continued recognition by industry experts such as Dittberner underscores our ongoing market leadership and unique ability to help operators leverage their existing investments as they transition to the converged future."

It has been a busy month for Tekelec, which agreed to acquire the remaining minority interest in Santera Systems for $75.6 million.
