Telefónica De España Deploys Broadworks-based VoIP Services
TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist
VoIP application software provider BroadSoft Inc. announced on Tuesday that Telefónica de España deployed VoIP services based on the BroadWorks VoIP application platform. According to the companies, the service, deployed over the Ericsson system, is one of the first IMS deployments delivering VoIP services to the residential and SME markets in that European country.
Telefónica is using BroadWorks applications based on an IMS-ready platform to deliver primary line services to residential consumers and SMEs over any broadband connection. By using the BroadWorks platform, Telefónica's customers will be able to manage their own service preferences via the Web. Applications such as simultaneous ring, where any call to the home number will automatically ring any other number specified by the user, can be managed directly by the customer, allowing end-users to make their own service changes such as setting up voicemail preferences and call forwarding.
Telefónica claims that this deployment is one of the world's first IMS deployments. BroadWorks apps function independent of the underlying IMS network, simplifying operations and enabling third-party apps, such as presence, to be more easily integrated. BroadSoft's IMS-compliant BroadWorks provides a range of VoIP apps, including hosted PBX, IP Centrex, mobile PBX, business trunking and residential broadband services fully integrated into a single hosted communications platform.
"Telefónica is respected in the industry, and when it deploys IMS and residential VoIP services, the industry takes notice," said BroadSoft's CEO and president Michael Tessler. "Working closely with Ericsson, we have enabled Telefónica to realize the value of its IMS infrastructure by deploying applications which are already in demand from end-users. Not only that, but by using BroadWorks, Telefónica is able to give customers control of their own service preferences."
Telefónica made news last Thursday when its Telefónica Móviles España division announced it joined forces with Outsmart Ltd. to deploy VoIP/mobile integrated network communications services. The SmartFMC Fixed Mobile Convergence System will be available via the "Plug 'n Talk" service, a preloaded softphone on a USB memory stick. Users will obtain a movistar number, preloaded with EUR15 prepaid credit, and will be able to make and receive calls though their PCs, using the Telefónica Móviles' mobile network. Telefónica Móviles has integrated the SmartFMC system in its network, which allows the same services that are currently available on the users' mobile phone to be accessible on their PC, via the Plug 'n Talk service.
VoIP service provider BroadSoft announced last month that it joined forces with telecom company Evoxus of Reading, Berkshire, to launch services for the enterprise market in the UK over the BroadWorks VoIP application platform. Evoxus offers bundled voice and data applications to enterprises within the retail, financial services and travel industries. With the BroadWorks platform in place, Evoxus will be able to integrate voice, data, video and business applications at the desktop for business clients. The new system will also enable enterprise administrators to control calling features for an entire department or a specific individual through the Web based portal, and add, change or move users quickly.
