Telefónica and Outsmart Deploy Mobile VoIP Net in Spain

TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist

Mobile operator Telefónica Móviles España announced on Thursday that it joined forces with Outsmart Ltd. to deploy VoIP/mobile integrated network communications services.

The SmartFMC Fixed Mobile Convergence System will be available via the "Plug 'n Talk" service, a preloaded softphone on a USB memory stick. Users will obtain a movistar number, preloaded with EUR15 prepaid credit, and will be able to make and receive calls though their PCs, using the Telefónica Móviles' mobile network. Telefónica Móviles has integrated the SmartFMC system in its network, which allows the same services that are currently available on the users' mobile phone to be accessible on their PC, via the Plug 'n Talk service.

"To test the seamless integration of VoIP communications and the movistar network and to anticipate the opportunities of this new technology is fundamental to make sure that Telefonica Móviles face this challenge with success" says Cayetano Lluch, technological general manager of Telefónica Móviles.

"The FMC live network deployment at 3GSM World Congress will mark the first delivery of voice communication through a PC over a mobile network in a way that effectively transforms the PC to a mobile handset" says Menahem Tirosh, CEO of Outsmart Ltd.

Telefónica Móviles made some noise back in November when it announced it tapped Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers to deliver its new 3G video telephony services. This new 3G, SIP-based, video telephony service will enable subscribers to use both wireless and wireline connections for their interactive video communications.

Through this partnership, Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers will support subscriber access. They provide a set of security functions comprised of access control, network topology hiding and DoS protection against both signaling and media attacks and overloads. The adaptive NAT traversal feature will enable the video calls to cross existing data firewalls at the customer premise over a broadband connection from a secure network element managed by Telefónica Móviles.
