Thomson Bundles Wideband Audio into Wireless VoIP
TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist
Media technology provider Thomson announced this week that it launched a suite of wireless VoIP devices, comprised of multiple play residential gateways and IP DECT phones that integrate wideband audio functionality. Through wideband audio, operators and service providers will be able to offer users near-CD quality sound.
"Wideband audio delivers superior voice quality both compared to regular PSTN and standard IP phone calls. Integrating this feature raises the bar not only in terms of the sophistication of broadband service delivery platforms but also for voice services across the board", said Bruno Fabre, vice president in charge of Telecom activities at Thomson. "We believe that in 2007 wideband audio will be implemented in 30 percent of the wireless VoIP devices dedicated to both the residential and enterprise markets."
Thomson has been pretty active in inking strategic partnerships for to also develop other IP-based services and products such as IPTV. Indeed, the company made news earlier this month when it announced an agreement to acquire the Thales Broadcast & Multimedia (TBM) business unit for an approximate purchase price of €130 million. Thales Broadcast & Multimedia provides platforms for IPTV services (TV services over Internet Protocol), video-on-demand, Mobile TV, and designs Digital TV and radio broadcasting systems and equipment.
By combining the TBM activities with Thomson’s existing Systems & Equipment offerings, the Group will be offering end-to-end products and services in IPTV, Mobile TV and Digital terrestrial transmission (DTT) markets.
