Verizon Scores Voice and Data Contract in New Hampshire

TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist

Verizon recently announced that it was tapped by Southern New Hampshire Medical Center to install a new SONET telecom voice and data network to serve the community and its patients who visit the its new emergency room, an expanded cardiac care unit. The partnership will enable the medical center to integrate telecommunications between its new facilities with the rest of its offices.

"Southern New Hampshire Medical Center is investing in advanced telecommunications technology to fulfill our mission to provide exceptional medical care," said Dwight Muller, the center's vice president of information systems. "We know that when health care teams can share information instantly, patients immediately benefit. We looked to Verizon's expertise to design and build a next-generation network for interconnecting our main campus with all of our other health care facilities."

The SONET ring network is a communications channel format that allows voice and data to flow around a break or cut in a telephone cable, making it more reliable than a direct line. The new network will enable doctors to share medical information and review their patients’ records in advance.

Also, the network will be the base for other services (purchased separately from other companies) that need speedy, large bandwidth, such as the picture archiving and communications system (PACS), which enables health care providers to store, retrieve, distribute and display medical images in a digital format.

"Southern New Hampshire Medical Center has made a sound strategic investment. SONET is a technology workhorse that can grow in support of bandwidth intensive medical applications. It’s the foundation that will provide the medical center with a stable, secure and resilient network, noted John Clifford, regional sales manager, Verizon Enterprise Solutions Group.

Verizon made news earlier this month when its Airfone division announced it was speeding up efforts to provide in-flight wireless broadband and VoIP-based calling services in the U.S. market. The news followed the Federal Communications Commission (FCC)'s approval for auctioning spectrum in the 800 MHz band for commercial air-to-ground telecom services, therefore allowing the auctioning of spectrum licenses amongst carriers by early next year. The agency's move would allow Verizon Airfone to begin offering in-flight wireless Internet access in 2007 if the carrier acquires a license. Verizon Airfone has been conducting in-flight demo tests in commercial planes since September last year. The service has achieved ground-to-air peak data speeds of 2.4 Mbps (megabits per second).
