Verizon, Yahoo Launch Cheaper Internet Service

By DAVID R. BUTCHER, Assistant Editor, Customer Interaction Solutions

Verizon Communications Inc. and Yahoo Inc. have teamed up to launch a cheaper high-speed Internet service designed to compete against cable operators and dial-up service providers.

For $14.95, subscribers will be able to download Web pages via DSL at speeds of up to 768 kilobits and upload data at 128 kilobits. The cheaper service requires a one-year contract, the price of which will go up after 12 months. An ad on Yahoo’s site notes that the lower-cost Internet service offers Yahoo premium services, such as antivirus protection, on-demand music videos and unlimited photo storage.

Yahoo was expected to formally announce the Verizon launch today, but an advertisement found on the company’s Web site last night preemptively detailed the DSL offering. A Yahoo representative confirmed the accuracy of the ad to AP.

Verizon is still significantly slower than SBC Communications with regard to transmission speed. SBC transmits data at up to 1.5 megabits, twice as fast as Verizon's. Yahoo and SBC launched a $14.95 DSL service in June.

Verizon will continue to offer faster DSL for higher prices. According to the ad on Yahoo's site, Verizon customers can pay between $19.95 and $37.95 to obtain transmission speeds comparable to SBC's — still quicker and cheaper than America Online’s monthly dial-up service.
