Session border control provider Acme Packet announced on Monday that it was tapped by Vodafone Spain, to use its Net-Net session border controllers to deliver its 3G video telephony services. Vodafone offers 3G services digital mobile and telephony services to nearly 13 million customers in Spain under the brand name of "Vodafone live! with 3G."

Acme Packet session border controllers extend the capabilities of Vodafone Spain's 3G mobile network and enable real-time conversational video telephony calling over both wireless and wireline connections. In delivering this service, Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers support subscriber access with a comprehensive set of security functions including DoS protection against both signaling and media attacks and overloads, access control and network topology hiding.

"Vodafone recognizes that 3G video telephony services are an important differentiator and are critical to generating higher revenue from their subscriber base," said Acme Packet's president and CEO Andy Ory. "Vodafone also recognizes that session border control is critical to secure, high-quality service delivery and that Acme Packet is the leader in this product category."

Vodafone made news earlier this month when it joined forces with Huawei Technologies to allow the Chinese manufacturer supply exclusive Vodafone-branded consumer 3G handsets for Vodafone across 21 countries for the next five years.

The handsets will only carry the Vodafone name. This is the first time the company has offered devices branded in this way for the consumer market. This is Huawei's first significant entry into the European handset market. Vodafone anticipates offering the first Vodafone-branded, Huawei-manufactured handset, a 3G model, in September 2006.

"This agreement with Huawei shows the cost benefits Vodafone's size and global reach can bring to our customers. We will be able to offer even better 3G phones at more competitive prices across our markets," said Vodafone Group's chief marketing officer Peter Bamford.
