VoIP guru and millionaire Idar Vollvik, known for founding Chess/Sense, a Norwegian-based VoIP service provider, which was acquired by TeliaSonera earlier this year, made news today for his unique purchase. According to BBC's news Web site, the business tycoon invested a reported U.S. $147,000 on a pair of boots donated by English soccer super superstar David Beckham for a charity auction event.
Norske Kvinners Sanitetsforening, which ran the charity auction, will use the money to buy tents that will provide shelter for thousands of Pakistani earthquake victims. The victims have been homeless since October 8th when the Kashmir earthquake hit Northern Pakistan. According to Wikipedia, "as of November 8th, the Pakistani government's official death toll was 87,350. Some estimate that the death toll could reach over 100,000."
The same Beckham boots have previously raised money for the Asian tsunami.
In related news, TeliaSonera recently announced that Axfood, one of the largest food retailers in Sweden, is upgrading its telecom services and investing in mobile and IP telephony. TeliaSonera Sweden has been selected as the provider of a new network. The contract is for a three-year period.
The agreement will enable Axfood integrate all of the company's communications into a single network instead of having several systems for fixed, mobile and Internet services.
"Modern, IP-based solutions offered by TeliaSonera simplify a company's day-to-day operations and open up opportunities for increasing efficiency. Axfood has discovered the benefits of a single-network solution and is giving TeliaSonera Sweden complete responsibility for the new communications system," said Dan Strömberg, senior vice president, marketing, products & services, TeliaSonera.
