Philips Now Offering VoIP-Enabled Baseband Chips for Cordless Phones

TMCnet Associate Editor

Royal Philips Electronics has reportedly launched its first VoIP-enabled baseband chips for cordless phones, which will allow consumers to use a cordless phone rather than a computer or wired phone to make calls over the internet.

The baseband chips belong to the Philips PCD8072x family of cordless phone baseband chips and offer phone manufacturers a VoIP solution. The technology opens the door to other IP features, such as Internet call waiting, caller ID and data links - and also combines current cordless handset features such as color displays, with high quality wideband voice functionality offered by IP telephony.

“With Philips VoIP enabled system solution, we were able to speed development time for our next generation cordless phone,” Dr. Edmund Ho, President, CEO and chairman of Ascalade Communications, a partner supplier with Philips Consumer Electronics, a division of Royal Philips Electronics, said in a news release. “Consumers can now enjoy Internet-based phone services away from their PC, providing them with added features and convenience in a phone that is also easy to use.”

The PCD8072x baseband chips form the heart of the Nexperia 820 cordless phone system solution, which can handle Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DECT (including US DECT) or WDCT as their transmission standards. Customers working with the Philips Nexperia cordless system solutions can now add VoIP to their existing products.

The chips contain high-end ARM7 and DSP technology and deliver high performance. The VoIP protocol stack is part of the firmware and is transparent to phone manufacturers, making it easy to construct a complete VoIP system. Depending on the wireless standard used, the VoIP task can be accomplished in the handset or in the base station. The PCD8072x also delivers very low power consumption allowing extended talk and standby time.

“As the number one supplier of chips for cordless phones and a leader in Wi-Fi and cellular technology, Philips is ideally placed to provide its customers with a flexible, easy to implement cordless VoIP solution,” said Guido Willi, international product marketing manager, cordless and IP terminal business line, Philips Semiconductors. “As the number of subscribers to residential VoIP services continues to grow, cordless VoIP phones are set to become increasingly popular.”

The PCD8072x family is currently shipping in volume to top cordless phone manufacturers worldwide. It is available as part of the Nexperia System Solution 820 or as a standalone product.

Philips will demonstrate the new VoIP baseband chips in January at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
