D-TAC and SCSI Partner to Deliver VoIP to U.S. Military Personnel at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba

TMCnet Associate Editor

U.S. military personnel stationed at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, can now save more than 80 percent on their long distance calls thanks to a partnership between D-TAC and Satellite Communication Systems Inc. (SCSI).

Together, the two companies have harnessed the power of SCSI’s network infrastructure, including satellite and terrestrial facilities, to provide the base with a full complement of VoIP services, including reduced long distance calling to the United States and International destinations; prepaid calling cards; dial-up Internet service and broadband access; and cell phone calling.

D-TAC is reportedly providing the call control application for the switching fabric, as well as accounting and tracking of all the calls that traverse the network.

Subsequently, long distance calling rates have been reduced by more than 80 percent for military personnel, their dependents, and contractors stationed at GTMO

Prior to taking advantage of VoIP, calls to the United States averaged $.51 per minute. Now, personnel stationed at the base have the option of making calls from base housing, barracks, or using a calling card for the payphones, at $.09 a minute.

GTMO is the oldest overseas U.S. Naval Base and the only one in a country with which the U.S. does not maintain diplomatic relations. The base serves as a cornerstone of U.S. Military operations in the Caribbean Theatre providing logistics support to both U.S. Navy and Coast Guard vessels and aircraft, as well as to assets of the Joint Task Force Guantanamo.

SCSI is a rapidly growing facilities-based international communications carrier. The company provides telecommunications services by satellite between the United States, Caribbean, Central and South America, Europe and Africa. Through an international gateway facility in Southern Florida, SCSI offers services in almost two thirds of the world and is expanding its reach into Asia and the Pacific Rim.
