Vonage Endorses New NENA VoIP E911 Technical Standard
TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist
Vonage Holdings Corp. announced Wednesday its backing up the National Emergency Number Association's (NENA) new interim/migratory (i2) technical standard for VoIP E911. With the approval of this new technical standard by NENA's Board of Directors on December 8, 2005, the VoIP community will be able to complete its already aggressive rollout schedule.
The release of the i2 technical standard combines the new technology of VoIP and the existing E911 system interface. The i2 technical standard enables VoIP providers to deliver full E911 service through the current E911 infrastructure. It is the first of a two part system revamp effort surrounding IP that was started two years ago and the first major E911 system design effort since its creation back in the 70's.
"The VoIP industry now has a template by which we can quickly deploy a national E911 system in record time," announced Jeffrey A. Citron, chairman and CEO, Vonage Holdings Corp. "Until now, the implementations were disparate, varying county by county, locality by locality. Now, the uniform i2 standard puts network owners, service providers, VPCs and public safety on the same page."
Today's announcement follows Vonage's recent deal with broadband phone company UTStarcom Inc. to launch the F1000, a portable WiFi handset manufactured by UTStarcom and configured with Vonage's VoIP phone service. The device, which will offer mobility across 802.11b networks and is currently available online, retails for $129.99 with a $50 instant rebate for a total of $79.99.
The F1000 WiFi handset is configured with Vonage's standard call features including three-way calling, call waiting, repeat dial on busy, call forwarding to user assigned number, call hold/resume, voicemail, call rejecting/redial/mute and Caller ID based on phone book entries. It also includes phone book favorites with distinctive ring options including silent, vibrate and selectable ring tones. Users will be able to also configure and save WiFi profiles. The device carries a battery with up to 5 hours of talk time, 50-100 hour standby and the ability to recharge in 2-3 hours.
