New Jersey-based VoIP service provider Vonage Holdings Corp. announced on Thursday it is offering a $100 mail-in-rebate on certified devices sold in over 9,000 retail locations within the U.S. The promotion will run from January 1st to February 4th, 2006.

Only customers purchasing Vonage devices from manufacturers such as Linksys, Motorola, Uniden and VTech will be eligible to receive the rebate. Their service must be activated within 15 days of purchase and maintained for at least 60 days in order to receive a $100 check from Vonage. Customers will receive rebate forms from Vonage-authorized retailers including but not limited to: Best Buy, Circuit City, Comp USA, Fry's Electronics, Staples and RadioShack. Further information about the offer is available online.

Vonage made news earlier this month when it announced on it was to back up the National Emergency Number Association's (NENA) new interim/migratory (i2) technical standard for VoIP E911. With the approval of this new technical standard by NENA's Board of Directors on December 8, 2005, the VoIP community was able to complete its already aggressive rollout schedule.

The release of the i2 technical standard combines the new technology of VoIP and the existing E911 system interface. The i2 technical standard enables VoIP providers to deliver full E911 service through the current E911 infrastructure. It is the first of a two part system revamp effort surrounding IP that was started two years ago and the first major E911 system design effort since its creation back in the 70's.
