Vonage Launches Virtual Numbers across Western Europe

TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist

Now subscribers to Vonage VoIP-based calling services will be able to have Western European virtual numbers. The VoIP provider announced on Thursday that it made available virtual numbers with area codes from Austria, France, Ireland, Italy and Spain. The move will enable European friends, family and business associates residing and working within these nations to now call U.S.-based Vonage customers for the price of a local call.

Vonage virtual phone numbers are inexpensive secondary numbers that ring to your primary Vonage line. These numbers are available to Vonage subscribers in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. for $9.99 USD, $11.99 CAD and pounds Sterling 5.99 GBP per month respectively. These numbers receive incoming calls only.

"Whether you live in Vienna, Dublin, Paris, Madrid or Rome, Vonage now allows you to call the U.S. for the price of a local call," said Michael Tribolet, president of Vonage America. "More importantly, this is a tremendous gain for the broadband telephony industry, as Vonage is making the world smaller. We are now able to bring friends, families and business associates from around the globe closer together."

Vonage now offers Virtual Numbers in the following European cities Vienna and Salzburg in Austria; Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille, Aix en Provence, Grenoble, Nice, Cannes, Nantes and Rouen; Dublin, Ireland; Milan, Rome, Turin, Naples, Florence and Bologna, Italy; Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Malaga, Cadiz, Bilbao and Santander, Spain.

Vonage made news earlier this month when it announced it now has E911 service in over 1700 PSAPs across the country. Vonage claimed that in just one week, the company equipped an additional 112 calling centers, in over 50 new counties, with 911 calling capabilities. The announcement followed a Federal Communications Commission (FCC) ruling which mandated VoIP service providers to have E911 access up and running by the end of last November.

The VoIP provider currently offers E911 access in the U.S. by sending the call, along with the customer's address and phone number, to the proper local emergency call center based on the caller's street address. The caller's info is then displayed on the dispatcher's screen whenever they dial the digits 9-1-1 from a Vonage phone. In the event local authorities cannot display the Vonage customer's phone number or address, Vonage offers basic 911.
