VoIP, Inc. Deploys Acme Packet

TMCnet VoIP Minute Watch Columnist

VoIP, Inc. announced on Wednesday it deployed Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers to deliver wholesale voice-over-IP (VoIP) services using its VoiceOne network. The VoiceOne network supports SS7, PRI, H.323, SIP and MGCP protocols, utilizing both circuit and packet-switched technology.

"As we continue to win VoIP provider business for the market's major brands, we must deliver the most reliable and secure network services in the industry. Acme Packet has provided us a truly reliable and scaleable solution for our network, allowing us to replace our current network of Netrake session border controllers. The dramatic increase in performance, reliability and the working relationship to integrate our proprietary softswitch architecture and technology seamlessly, has shown an immediate increase in network redundancy and quality," said VoIP, Inc.'s chief technology officer Shawn Lewis. "Acme Packet's feature set, product performance and support have proven to be vastly superior in our rigid evaluation and aggressive deployment process."

Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers (SBC) are deployed in multiple VoiceOne points-of-presence throughout the U.S. They will interconnect the public networks and data centers of the company's service provider customers to the private, managed VoiceOne network. The Acme Packet SBCs provide a suite of security functions for VoiceOne including access control, network topology hiding and DoS protection against both signaling and media attacks and overloads.

"VoIP, Inc. is rapidly emerging as a major player in the market for wholesale VoIP services, especially among the leading broadband ISPs and next generation communications service providers," declared Andy Ory, president and CEO, Acme Packet. "We have the products, organization and experience to continue VoIP, Inc.'s incredible success, enabling them to satisfy the needs of their extremely brand-conscious customers."

"Acme Packet is honored to be one of the few technology vendors to participate in the (3)VoIP TAP," remarked Seamus Hourihan, vice president product management and marketing, Acme Packet. "This program is one of the first of its kind in the industry dedicated to working with vendors to enable service provider connections to Level 3's network in a quick and efficient manner."

The announcement followed Acme's recent partnership with Telefónica Móviles España, a mobile operator in Spain. Telefónica is using Packet's Net-Net session border controllers to deliver its new 3G video telephony services, the companies announced on Monday. This new 3G, SIP-based, video telephony service will enable subscribers to use both wireless and wireline connections for their interactive video communications.

Through this partnership, Acme Packet's Net-Net session border controllers will support subscriber access. They provide a set of security functions comprised of access control, network topology hiding and DoS protection against both signaling and media attacks and overloads. The adaptive NAT traversal feature will enable the video calls to cross existing data firewalls at the customer premise over a broadband connection from a secure network element managed by Telefónica Móviles España.
