AT&T IP Connects InterContinental's 76 Hotels

AT&T announced this week it was tapped by InterContinental Hotels Group in order to deploy an Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN) for its managed Candlewood Suites Hotel portfolio. The companies claim the project will be the first of its kind in the hospitality industry.
The new networking architecture would centralize the property management software app at the telecom giant's Atlanta-area Internet Data Center (IDC) eliminating the need for individual servers at each location. The project will enable the 76 Candlewood Hotel locations to now access the core hotel operating system over a secure, privately managed net with a lower equipment and maintenance cost.
"IHG has always envisioned a networking platform that allows us to offer hotels access to their property management system from a centralized location," said Gustaaf Schrils, vice president of Hotel Technology Services for the Americas Region of IHG. "However, until now, networking technology made this model cost-prohibitive, difficult to implement and a serious network security risk."
AT&T's VPN and Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology provides a multi-faceted network. MPLS prioritizes data traffic between the hotel and the property management app residing at the telecom giant's IDC, ensuring app performance and uninterrupted communications.
For this project, AT&T will replaced a "hub and spoke" network that offered limited port speeds with an IP VPN. With the AT&T IP VPN in place, each York location will be able to connect directly with any other company location and at data speeds twice as fast as the old network. The network also includes class of service capabilities, which prioritize network traffic and enable VoIP apps.
