Large-Scale Data Migration Possible With First DMO Service

By Susan J. Campbell

Organizations needing to move large amounts of mission-critical data between locations now have an alternative to Fibre Channel over IP technologies. NetEx, a provider of high performance data transport solutions, has released its HyperIP Data Migration Optimizer (DMO) program, the industry’s first DMO service, to accelerate large-scale data migration over existing IP networks.

The HyperIP DMO program is designed to provide organizations with the means to transmit data between locations on a short-term basis, such as three to six months. HyperIP operates as a network device, providing transparent data replication across IP WANs while improving the use of links and preventing the effects of packet loss.

NetEx has positioned its HyperIP to offer data block-level compression and sequence reduction algorithms for increasing the throughput of data up to a factor of 15:1, depending on the data being transferred. HyperIP also mitigates inherent network latency for remote TCP/IP data transmissions, controls bandwidth for intensive applications and makes adjustments for changing bandwidth requirements.

Companies are also able to utilize their own existing Ethernet and IP WAN infrastructure for the migrations. Additionally, migrations can be done over the public internet. The migrations can be completed with a wide variety of data replication/migration products such as EMC SRDF Adaptive Copy and SRDF/A on Gigabit Ethernet Directors, EMC Centera & Celerra Replicator, Network Appliance (NetApp) SnapMirror and SnapVault, to name a few.

NetEx is targeting qualified storage resellers, project consultants and Systems Integrators with its The HyperIP. The company is also offering substantial discounts to NetEx HyperChannel partners who include HyperIP as part of their complete data migrations project offering.

According to Robert MacIntyre, Vice President of Business Development and Marketing at NetEx, many companies are facing obstacles when trying to transfer multiple terabytes of data within restricted timeframes such as relying on slower technologies like TCP. MacIntyre claims the HyperIP DMO overcomes transport limitations to provide a simple and secure solution.

NetEx was formed in 1999 as a spin-off of Storage Technology Corporation, now SUN Microsystems. NetEx is a privately held company focusing on customers in the financial services industry and airline and telecommunications providers around the world.

Large-scale data transmissions are a thing of necessity for large organizations as technology is allowing for ease of global expansion. Even companies located within the same continent still have to be able to transmit data to their home office or to other industry specific agencies. In an economy where time is worth more today than it was yesterday, speed and accuracy in technology is in great demand. If organizations can increase delivery of mass amounts of data, this can mean improvements in service and support for their internal and external customers. NetEx promises its solution is a more cost effective alternative to traditional methods and all things considered, they may be right.
