IP telephony provider Citel Technologies is the newest member of the Avaya DeveloperConnection program offered by Avaya Inc., the companies announced on Thursday.

The membership will allow Citel develop SIP handset gateways that will eventually be compatible with the Avaya Converged Communication Server, a software app that bundles Avaya's IP telephony capabilities with SIP and presence for enterprise-class instant messaging (IM) and SIP telephony. The agreement will also enable customers to migrate to the advanced SIP capabilities of the Avaya Converged Communications Server without replacing their digital PBX telephones and go through the usual wiring mess associated with a telecom switchover.

"Citel has had a long and productive relationship with Avaya's BusinessPartner community through our well known EXTender and call recording products," said Mike Robinson, CEO of Citel Technologies. "Membership in the Avaya DeveloperConnection program with our SIP Handset Gateways further strengthens our relationship with Avaya and our collaboration with those BusinessPartner to bring solutions to customers. By working more closely with Avaya to deliver compliance-tested solutions to the market, we will simplify and accelerate the transition to next-generation IP telephony solutions."

The Avaya DeveloperConnection program current member list includes more than 1,000 software and hardware developer companies, integrators, service providers and customers. So far, program members have created natural language speech recognition apps, wireless services, specialized computer telephony integration and reporting capabilities, and apps tailored for specific vertical industries, all ready to be tested for Avaya compliance.

"Our Avaya developer community has become a catalyst for rapid innovation and the creation of new multivendor applications that help enterprises around the world embed secure, reliable communications capabilities into the fabric of their business, making their people more productive, processes more intelligent and customers more satisfied," said Eric Rossman, vice president, Developer Relations and Technical Alliances for Avaya.

Avaya has been very busy this week. Indeed, the company announced it acquired Nimcat Networks and a key partnership with Sprint.

On Monday, the company announced it acquired Nimcat Networks, an IP-based, p2p applications software developer. The transaction was valued at approximately CAD$46 million in cash. Nimcat Networks, headquartered in Ottawa, was privately-held.

Avaya's deal with Sprint, announced on Tuesday, will allow the companies to develop and deliver a hosted VoIP-based telephony wireline and wireless service for the North American marketplace. The agreement calls for Avaya to work with Sprint to offer Avaya's portfolio of IP communications applications including IP Telephony, Wireless Integration and Messaging in a hosted model. Sprint will supply customers with hosted IP telephony and wireless services and applications on a per-seat, per-month basis.
