Spirit Telecom Tapped to Replace South Carolina's Data Network

The State of South Carolina recently awarded an $85 million contract to Spirit Telecom to replace the state's data network with a Multi Protocol Label Switching Network.
 
Under the agreement, Spirit Telecom will be the primary provider and BellSouth will serve as the subcontractor to deliver the new network. 
 
The MPLS technology, which enables traffic engineering and enhanced performance of IP transport, will provide the state with a more economical and reliable network, according to a news release.
 
In addition to the network, the agreement also calls for the development of a customized Web site that will allow network users to access an automated system for billing, ordering, provisioning, service level management and trouble shooting.


 
"This IP transport technology allows customers to communicate with enhanced voice, data and video solutions over a common network platform," the news release states.

 
Replacing a state's network is nothing new to BellSouth, which was awarded an agreement by the Georgia Technology Authority last year to upgrade Georgia's wide area network based on MPLS.
