IPTV is now available to subscribers within the Nordic region. Amino, an IPTV software and consumer premises equipment provider confirmed that it has worked with Canal Digital, the largest provider of TV content and TV services to the Nordic residential market, to deploy the AmiNET110 IPTV set-top boxes to subscriber homes to offer full IPTV services by the end of 2005.

Canal Digital is already a market leader in the satellite and cable television services with over 2.9 million customers in the Nordic countries. The company’s ability to recognize the potential for IPTV will contribute to its vision of every individual receiving a personalized TV offering.

Terje Storhaug, CTO of Canal Digital noted that the company aims to not only offer its customers unrivalled TV programming, but to enhance the entertainment experience. IPTV is a growing industry which will provide Canal Digital customers with more flexibility when deciding how they wish to receive digital television.

Storhaug added that the selection of Amino as one of the partner suppliers was due to the quality of the Amino products as well as their good reputation in the market.

Initially the service roll-out will target subscribers who are able to receive popular Canal Digital content over DSL-enabled telephone infrastructure and fiber to the home (FTTH). IPTV service subscribers will be able to order individual movies or games which can be downloaded and instantly enjoyed.

Based on Amino’s award-winning compact design, the AmiNET 110 set-top box is compatible with the MPEG-2 video compression standard which is the most common format for digital IPTC content. The unit also features an Ethernet input and flexible audio/video output with a USB interface to use with game controllers.

Video streaming to other televisions around the home is possible due to the use of Coaxsys and ReadyLinks SmartFoot™ adapters through existing coax cable infrastructure. This ability reduces the cost for operators deploying IPTV.

According to Roy Kirsopp, VP Global Sale Amino, IPTV is starting to enter its stride as more service providers worldwide realize its potential for increasing customer loyalty and at the same time growing revenue through additional, expandable service offerings.

Kirsopp also noted that Canal Digital has been quick to respond to recognize the trend and Amino expects the deployment to be the first of many in the region as more companies consider it a viable competitor technology to cable and satellite services.

The trends in the industry dictate that Kirsopp is right on target in his prediction that the Canal Digital deployment will be the first of many in the market. On-demand service offerings are leading in the industry and consumers will soon tire of the standard cable and satellite offerings when IPTV is available. Expect to see many competitors in this region as the opportunity is immense and the demand will swiftly increase now that the services are available.
