Alexa Uses Moab Technology in New Web Search Platform
Cluster Resources, Inc., provider of workload and resource management software and services, announced today that its Moab Utility/Hosting Suite will be integrated into Alexa Internet’s new Alexa Web Search Platform.
Alexa Internet, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, is using the Moab suite to create a Web search platform that enables users to create their own search engines for a fraction of the price of alternatives.
Using the Alexa Web Search Platform—now in Beta—customers will have access to a customized, dynamically-generated “mini-supercomputer” that taps into Alexa’s extensive data store, as well as its analysis stools, storage facilities, and high-speed network.
Empowered by these tools, users will be able create their own Web search quickly, efficiently, and affordably.
The implications of Moab’s suite reaches far beyond the search engine industry, however. The technology also gives High Powered Computing (HPC) organizations the power to affordably set up low-maintenance systems for renting out their resources over the Web.
Moab’s technology is currently used by academic organizations to rent their resources to local weather stations on weekends; by hardware vendors to let partners test their software on specific hardware; and by organizations to lease out unused HPC resources.
“This software will open the door to utility computing for any HPC organization that wants to share resources efficiently,” said David Jackson, Chief Technology Officer of Cluster Resources, in a press release.
In the same way that Alexa is now able to reduce the cost of starting a new search engine, Moab’s technology can help other HPC organizations lower the costing of sharing their resources with users in scientific, business, and other industries.
