Harry Potter site nabs Yahoo! award

The Associated Press

It began as a one-man quest to detail the mystical world of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter -- now a burgeoning fan Web site was hailed Thursday as one of the best of the year.

The Leaky Cauldron, a detailed resource on the teenage wizard, beat out competition from U.S. space agency NASA's site to claim an award from search engine Yahoo! Inc.

"It's a well-designed and comprehensive site that has won the approval of Potter fans everywhere," said Andy Williams, of Yahoo!, as the site won a user award after 5,000 votes were cast in the company's Finds of the Year 2005 awards.

The Web site, now run by a team of fans, has also won the approval of Rowling, who has been interviewed by the site.

"The online Harry Potter world is enormous and we're thrilled to be able to help avid fans to navigate their way around it," said Melissa Anelli, one of the site's authors.
