DISH Network Launches Local HDTV Channels in Kansas City

EchoStar Communications Corporation and its DISH Network satellite TV service has launched local high definition TV channels via its satellite TV service to customers in Kansas City and its 30 surrounding counties. This provides an alternative to local cable service and the viewers can enjoy watching their favorite shows in high definition.

 

A study by Kagan Research in September 2005 shows that around 34 million HDTV's will be owned by people in the US by the end of this year. The report predicts an exponential growth in the coming years and expects around 83 percent of all U.S. households to purchase an HDTV monitor by 2010.

DISH Network expanded its HD channel lineup in 2006 and launched the new DishHD programming packages, since around 40 percent of HDTV households don’t subscribe to HD programming.

 

The addition of new national HD networks including ESPN2 HD and Universal HD, plus five new original VOOM HD channels will enable DishHD to offer a comprehensive lineup of HD programming in the pay-TV industry.

 

By the end of 2006 DISH Network will launch high definition local channels through its satellite service in additional cities across the country. This will reach more than 50 percent of U.S. TV households with local HD channels. 
 

Using DishHD packages customers can avail over1, 700 hours of HD programming every week across more than 23 available channels which include HD local broadcasts.
For a monthly fee of $49.99 a month, they can access the entire DishHD lineup plus get more than 70 all-digital standard definition channels. Local channels in both high definition and standard definition can be added for $5 a month.
