AT&T Completes Work at Shell New Orleans Office

TMCnet Contributing Editor

Before Hurricane Katrina destroyed the gulf coast, Shell Exploration & Production Company (SEPCo) had hired AT&T Inc. to provide upgrades to the company's IT system between New Orleans and Houston. With the return of Shell and its 1,000 employees to their New Orleans offices, the completion of the work is timely. The five-year contract expands and extends a long-standing relationship between the two companies.

Moving quickly to meet the original project timetable and coincide with the return of SEPCo's temporarily displaced staff to what was left of the city of New Orleans; AT&T (News - Alert) has implemented a custom-managed high-availability system that provides a private high speed fiber-optic network and the latest optical switching technology. With security and high speed connectivity, this gives Shell the capability to transmit in just one second all the data typically found on a PC.

"Many organizations are implementing business-continuity strategies in the wake of 2005's Gulf Coast hurricanes. Even so, a recent survey by AT&T and the International Association of Emergency Managers found that nearly a third of companies in the U.S. have not developed, implemented or tested a disaster-contingency plan," noted the telecom's news release.

AT&T made news on Wednesday when it announced that it scored a new contract from the Daughters of Charity Health System (DCHS), a regional health care organization comprised of six hospitals and medical centers located in Northern and Southern California.

The new, three-year contract calls for AT&T to provide Opt-E-MAN, a public switched Ethernet service. This service will connect DCHS' five primary hospital and data center locations by linking each site's local area network (LAN). DCHS will also adopt AT&T's Virtual Private Network (VPN) for centralized network management, monitoring, and AT&T Frame Relay services for increased bandwidth to accommodate new applications, such as a Physician Portal and a Picture Archival Communication System (PACS) for improved patient care throughout the network.
