Digi Introduces Digi Connect WAN IA Wireless WAN Router

TMCnet Contributing Editor

Digi International has announced the Digi Connect WAN IA, a wireless WAN cellular router tailored for industrial automation applications. The router is part of the Digi Connect WAN family of wireless WAN routers, and provides secure cellular GSM or CDMA connections for primary and backup network connectivity. IT is ideal for industrial automation devices like SCADA devices, programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and remote terminal units.

The unit acts as a wireless WAN cellular router/gateway, creating secure WAN connections via an Ethernet-to-cellular or serial-to-cellular interface for remote mission-critical data operations. The Digi Connect WAN IA  offers industrial hardware and software components, which include a terminal block for power, DIN rail mounting, Class 1, Division 2 certification and Modbus support.

Additional feature include local intelligence like network routing, persistent connections, a firewall and a secure integrated remote management software package. The unit also offers TCP/UDP, DHCP support, NAT, port forwarding, GRE protocol tunneling and access control lists. It is supported by the Digi Connectware Manager, an enterprise-class management software application that runs on a customer's central server for managing Digi Connect WAN devices. Administrators may access one device or thousands through the software, for management, monitoring, alerts and troubleshooting. It also includes built-in Dynamic DNS server for mapping an Internet host name to a dynamic/public IP address.

”The Digi Connect WAN IA uses wireless GSM or CDMA networks to create a TCP/IP connection to remote sites and devices for applications in utilities, water/wastewater, oil and gas, metering or any other industrial application," said Larry Kraft, senior vice president of sales and marketing, Digi International. "Wireless can be a more cost effective solution than traditional landline connections and provides a broader coverage to remote locations. It also avoids wire-related vulnerabilities like outages caused by weather or construction."
