TalkTalk Introduces Free Broadband Package in Europe

TMCnet Contributing Editor

TalkTalk, the home phone branch of the Carphone Warehouse, soon will be unveiling its new ‘free broadband’ package in Europe. The company claims that the service will reduce phone bills by 60 percent.

The package will be launched in July 2006. It offers subscribers an unlimited home phone package that includes local, national and international calls. TalkTalk has started taking advanced orders now for this deal.

Customers will pay a one-time setup fee £29.99, and then a monthly line rental fee of £11 and a per-month service charge of £9.99. Local and national calls are included, as are international calls to 28 countries on TalkTalk’s list (which includes the U.S., Australia, and all countries in the EU).

The service offers speeds of up to 8Mbps. Most home broadband phone packages in the U.K. are considerably slower than that, at approximately 0.5 to 2Mbps.

Although current phone exchanges can’t handle such fast service, TalkTalk hopes to cover enough exchanges by May 2007 to make the 8Mbps speed available to 70 percent of homes in the U.K.

TalkTalk faces stiff competition. Other providers offer several free extras like wireless routers, anti-virus software, firewalls and free VOIP calls. Customers likely will think twice before committing to the required 18-month contract, appealing as the service may be.
