Apple shuts customer support call center in India
The Associated Press
Apple (News - Alert) Computer Inc. has decided not to open a customer support call center in India, a company official said Tuesday.
Earlier this year, Apple had announced plans to open a technology support center in Bangalore, India's technology hub, and had hired dozens of staff. The Cupertino, California-based, company had said the Indian center would eventually staff 600 employees.
But Indian media reports during the weekend said the company had laid off all the employees it had hired since announcing its plan in March. They were paid two months' severance pay, the Times of India reported.
Apple spokesman Steve Dowling confirmed the move but refused to dive details of how many people were laid off and what, if any, severance was paid.
"We have re-evaluated our plans and have decided to put our planned support center growth in other countries," he said in an e-mail to The Associated Press. He did not offer any reasons for the change of plans.
The news comes as IBM (News - Alert) Corp. announced Tuesday it would triple its investment in India to US$6 billion (euro4.6 billion) over the next three years and increase the number of its employees in Bangalore, without elaborating.
