WiMAX Gains Momentum, Competes With DSL

For a technology that has established itself in broadband communications, WiMAX is positioned on the forefront of the competition, says a recent report from TelecomView.

According to analysts at TelecomView, the WiMAX network market is expected to gain 88 million subscribers, accounting “for $43 billion in system spending by 2011.”

"We found that better than 60 percent of these subscribers will be in developing countries," said Ian Cox, Principal Analyst at TelecomView and coauthor of TelecomView’s report.

"Our business cases show that WiMAX will be competitive with fixed DSL services where copper loops are in place," said Bob Larribeau, Principal Analyst at TelecomView in a statement. "However, WiMAX is the only choice where copper is not available."

According to the release, the report also finds that up to a quarter of the subscribers in this forecast will be using a converged service that combines fixed and mobile WiMAX by 2011.
